In the old days, they used to say that if a child drowned in the river, it was the old water spirit, the Au-mann, collecting his dues, a payment to prevent the river from overflowing its banks and bringing death and destruction to the town.

But for over 200 years, no one has listened to the Au-mann, and no one has paid their dues. People have believed that they were stronger than nature, but they were wrong! Nature is outside our control. Or is it people who are outside of control?

According to Hans Christian Andersen, the Au-mann lives near the Albani Bridge in the centre of Odense, and it is here that a balance needs to be re-established. Right here in the dark space between the land and the water: a new encounter – a new future?
