Pool B: Open call for larger scale projects

Who can apply?

This pool is open only to larger scale projects with a budget of 350,000-1,000,000 DKK.

National and international performers with documented international experience can apply with innovative projects related to Hans Christian Andersen’s artistic world and values. Read about the festival’s key concepts from the world of Hans Christian Andersen here.

It is possible for the festival only to meet a very limited number of projects within this call – and only under the prerequisite that is possible to raise external funding of the projects.

Which projects can apply for funding support?

It is possible to apply for funding support for any type of project and its related costs, excluding costs for marketing. Projects implemented by established cultural institutions cannot expect H.C. Andersen Festivals to subsidize payment of employees or standard operating costs. The projects must be carried out within the festival area in Odense city during week 34 in August.

What should the application include?

  • Contact information.
  • Brief project description (max. 10 lines). In addition to the written description you can include a link to a short video presentation (optional – of max. 3 minutes).
  • Detailed project description, including a description of the project’s artistic intent.
  • CV for the main performers of the project.
  • Description of the project’s relation to the festival’s core values.
  • Implementation schedule.
  • Location and staging requirements (i.e. stage measurements, need for sound equipment, etc.).
  • Budget with financial plan.
  • Target audience.
  • Genre.

Terms and requirements

To be considered for the H.C. Andersen Festival’s, projects in Pool B are expected to:

  • Have a clear and visible relation to Hans Christian Andersen’s artistic world and values/concepts.
  • Have (a) well-defined target group(s).
  • Reflect that they are part of the broad and diverse cultural festival that is H.C. Andersen Festivals.
  • Are prepared to collaborate closely with the festival secretariat on fundraising.
  • Are capable of developing and delivering their projects, including the actual production, in a continuing dialogue with the festival secretariat.

In addition, the projects must meet at least 3 of the following criteria:

  • Must be innovative and has its premiere during the H.C. Andersen Festivals.
  • Have an international dimension or an international perspective.
  • Involve local artists and/or local talents.
  • Explores the options and expressions of Odense city.
  • Heightens the festival’s attractiveness to audiences and national and international media.
  • Are current to their time and surrounding society.

Considerations for 2025

2025 marks the 150th anniversary for the death of Hans Christian Andersen. The festival will pay special attention to projects in Pool B that considers this. You are welcome to contact the festival secretariat to discuss this subject.

How are the applications assessed?

All applications will be reviewed by the festival’s subject committees with businesspeople and experts in the fields of theatre, dance, music, art, subculture, street performance and cultural communication. 

Selected projects will be invited to closer conversation with the festival secretariat in January.

Application and deadlines

You can apply for Pool B app. 20 months prior to the implementation of the project at the festival.

The festival's official application form must be used for submission.

It is also mandatory to use the festival's budget form.

Next opportunity to apply will be for 2026. Application deadline is 1 November 2024.
