About the festival
From August 4 until autumn 2025, the city of Odense will be marking the 150th anniversary of the death of Hans Christian Andersen.
Do you believe in life after death?
Hans Christian Andersen was convinced that “Our bodies die, but the soul cannot die.” These are the words he chose to be engraved on his gravestone.
Although he is no longer here in person, we encounter his soul in his words. In his fairy tales, poems, and stories. Because they revolve around life and death in ways that we can still relate to.
With Andersen Forever, we bring these works to life. Through art and culture, we focus on the afterlife, loss, memory, and immortality—and invite you to engage in existential conversations in the heart of the city. From exhibitions and performances to installations and experiences that transcend time.
H.C. Andersen's belief in eternal life has fulfilled its own prophecy. His stories continue to make an impression – on children and adults, from Nr. Nebel to New Delhi. And that is exactly what Andersen Forever is all about.
The H.C. Andersen Festivals is also participating in the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of H.C. Andersen's death, and you will therefore recognize the themes in some of the festival's activities in 2025.
Welcome to a living story in the heart of Odense.
