Step inside the large greenhouse at the square of Gråbrødre Plads in Odense, where animated flowers and plants grow in wondrous harmony amidst the music from the performance I Am a Mother. Experience a contemplative soundscape featuring crystal-clear vocals, atmospheric cello and beating hearts. Every single plant and every single flower is a human life, people who are still living, one in China, one in Greenland, indeed all around the world.

Here beats my heart – and yours.

The flowers and plants in the greenhouse are all imaginative creatures, created in the spirit of Hans Christian Andersen. Hans Christian Andersen’s father mended shoes. People called him a cobbler. And from his father, Hans Christian Andersen learnt the art of mending; of piecing old things together and thereby giving them new life. It is an art that is carried on in the Atelier at H.C. Andersen’s House, where visitors in June and July can patch together a personal flower for the installation in the greenhouse. The flower models have been created by artist Betina Følleslev of Frøken Følleslev in close collaboration with H.C. Andersen’s House.

After hours the flowers will be adorned with light and can be seen from outside the green house.

The music
Recording and arrangement by Line Felding, Jacob Chano Lundby and Betina Følleslev. The music was created by composer and musician Line Felding and singer-songwriter Betina Følleslev for the poetic musical performance 'Jeg er en Mor' (I Am a Mother), which premiered at the H.C. Andersen Festival in 2024 at TID – Museum of Odense. The starting point was the fairy tale The Story of a Mother, as well as the research project and exhibition MOR! created by museum curator Camilla Schjerning.

Supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, H.C. Andersen Festivals and the Danish Artists’ Union.
