“The Boundless Duckling” is a large chalk drawing on the ground only visible in its entirety from a scaffold with a platform 3.5 metres above the ground. This gives you a rare “bird’s-eye view” of the motif coming together: the story of the ugly duckling’s transformation into a swan – inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale and his own life journey. Over the first few days of the festival, artist Amir Hussain has created this enormous work of art, and you can now see the finished result.
From ground level, the work appears as abstract traces and movements, but seen from above, the whole picture emerges. The contrast between the perspectives becomes part of the experience – and a metaphor for the boundary-crossing and pattern-breaking: the dream of finding one’s own form and path in life.
The use of chalk makes the work both monumental and temporary. Wind, weather and time will slowly dissolve the image, reminding us of the transience of art – and the beauty of that which exists only for a moment.
