Odense city transforms into a cultural celebration, when Beijing GuoYi Children's Peking Opera Troupe takes the stage. With a combination of various traditional art forms from China, performed by talented Chinese children, the streets become a world of dramatic colours, stories and fantasy. You can gain an insight of some of the rich, Chinese opera traditions and stories, presented by the talented young troupe.

Face-changing (Bian Lian)

Witness the performers change faces in the blink of an eye — in an abstract representation of emotions with masks, bright costumes and bodily gestures. A form that captures spirits. Face-changing is a unique technique from the Chinese Sichuan-opera, originating during the Ming Dynasty in the 18th-19th century; a true insight into the traditional Chinese opera form.

Nezha Battles Sun Wukong

Experience an intense battle with fire-tipped spears, magical weapons and transformations: Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, creates an uprising in Heaven, and it’s up to Nezha, a powerful protection deity in Chinese mythology, to stop him. In a conflict against good and evil, the performance combines martial arts, acrobatics and vocal artistry. Based on Journey to the West, a Chinese novel from the 16th century and Chinese folklore.

The Legend of Lady Taizhen

Yang Yuhuan is a legendary Chinese woman — one of the Four Great Beauties of ancient China. Through dance, this opera tells the story of how she, with her grace and dancing talents, won the heart of the Chinese Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and how she received the name “Lady Taizhen”. A historical narration that echoes through time.

Chisang Town

Black facial makeup symbolising integrity and authority. The judge Bao Zheng from the Song Dynasty is a cultural symbol of justice in today’s China. Witness his story and his decisions along the way, as his nephew breaks the law.

The Legend of the White Snake

Have you heard of the Chinese zodiacs, the 12 assigned animals? This year, 2025, marks the Year of the Snake. For this reason, this performance tackles the Legend of the White Snake — a love story between a serpent spirit and a mortal in a combination of Chinese mythology, devotion and sacrifice.
